RISK MANAGEMENT & SAFETY – AND NO LLAMAS!
A two-part tutorial. As an administrator ultimately responsible for the safety of all students in your school, do you pray no students break an ankle jumping off the edge of the stage (it happens)!? When was your fly system/winch system/deadhung pipes and electrics last inspected? How about your drapes flame tested? Are your students allowed on the scissor lift? Why not?! Do you have a written safety manual? After completing this two-part tutorial you’ll have powerful tools needed to administer a safe facility; know what safety requirements to insist upon (personal safety, systems safety), identify legal requirements for students operating equipment, communicate the benefits of staffing your theatre. And, I’ll tell you my Llama Story… |
FINANCES & FUNDING
The person managing your high school theatre requires certain financial skills. An understanding of finances helps them communicate with you about the theatre’s needs, and also helps them communicate with events about how their finances will affect their needs. There are a lot of financial decisions that must be made when running a high school theatre. Consequently, because this person is your employee, you too must have an understanding of your school theatre’s finances. After completing this tutorial you will: have a basic understanding of the costs involved in running a high school theatre, have a basic understanding of the sources of revenue for a high school theatre. |
THEATRE STAFFING
Are you frustrated with the way your school theatre is being run? Or, not being run? In this tutorial you will gain tools to help you determine staffing models, and come up with an Action Plan to help you understand the level of staffing needed for a school theatre. In this tutorial you will look at staffing models and: identify the variety of ways high school theatres are staffed, develop your own staffing model that best suits your situation, know how staffing choices can affect safety, equipment and operations. |
EVENT MANAGEMENT
Do you have a lot of events using your theatre; from concerts to plays to meetings to churches to dance recitals to _________ (add your list here!)? Who site-supervises your events; teachers, theatre staff, yourself, the custodians? In this tutorial you will discover powerful tools to instigate and implement use guidelines, facility preservation, safety, procedures – that event organizers will heed! It’s imperative that the person managing your theatre obtains as much information as possible about each event before it comes into the theatre, and creates an environment whereby the technical aspects of each event can be optimized. This is where you can support them by: being familiar with what information is needed to support event success, understanding the shortfalls of high school theatre models where importance is placed on outcome but little importance is placed on input. |
EDUCATING STUDENTS – IT’S WHY WE’RE HERE!
Why are we even running a theatre in a school? What’s it all for? Have you considered that tech theatre is STEM? (I call it “STEM Behind the Scenes”!) Did you know that technical theatre is a CTE and vocational subject, and that some of your students will eventually go into the entertainment industry? Think about how many names are listed on the credits of a movie! Too often theatre education is only viewed as the “performing” arts, and there is little or no consideration for the role that STEM and CTE plays in technical theatre education. After completing this tutorial you will: know how tech theatre prepares your students with the skills they will need in the entertainment industry, gain the knowledge of how Technical Theatre education benefits all students. |
