TEACHERS SAY:
“We thoroughly enjoyed [this course, it] was clear and easily understood by my kiddos! They are loving this. The LED lesson was great! I had new-to-our-tech class this semester do this first - they weren’t as familiar with the board as the others - and they got it on the first read thru! Test was clear and easy for them to understand.” - Element Basics Course Drama Teacher and Students, Indiana "Although I have been led through this process before, this was so much more clear. “Daisy-chaining” this process to recorded subs was a breeze afterwards!" - Element Basics Course - LED lesson Theatre, Music and Dance Teacher, Arts Dept. Head, New Hampshire |

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR Hi! I'm Beth Rand. (That's me on stage left.) I began my theatrical lighting design journey at my own high school theatre, and I have been working in educational tech theatre ever since. I was an educational Theatre Manager for 8 years, and an educational Lighting Designer since 1997. I have a BA in Drama; Stage Lighting, an MS in Entertainment Business, and I earned a Theatre Arts teaching certificate. So many theatre teachers tell me that they understand, and can teach, almost all aspects of technical theatre, but that they are in the dark (haha) about stage lighting techniques and design. So I decided to create these mini self-paced tutorials specifically to help theatre teachers. And because I know how busy you are(!), they are all of a short duration and self-paced. |
HOW DOES IT WORK?
CONVENIENT
Each short mini self-paced tutorial (2 to 5 weekly lessons) looks at one specific skill at a time, so it’s not an overwhelming time commitment. Also, each course is not based on mastery of the prior course, so you can take them in any order or combination.
EASY FORMAT
Your tutorial will be emailed to you as a pdf (or several - depending on the course).
SELF-PACED
But - this is really a self-paced course - there are no hard deadlines. No pressure to complete any tutorial in any specified time frame. You can complete your tutorial any time that is convenient to you. There is no rush - and no repercussions!
STANDARD ONLINE FORMAT
The tutorials are entirely provided to you online, and no specialized computer knowledge is needed. Each tutorial is e-mailed to you as a regular attachment. You print it out and complete the requirements.
SHORT MANAGEABLE LESSONS
Each lesson is made up of:
Clear explanations and concepts
A Tricks Tips Terms sheet, if applicable.
The tutorial application.
A Self-Assessment lets you know how well you did!
SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
LITT tutorials are not copyrighted - that would defeat the purpose! Now you own lesson plans that you can use year after year with your own students.

The LITT tutorials cover many aspects of stage lighting, of which ladder, lift and counterweight system safety is a part. Safety tests within the courses are based on CTE standards. The instructor is not a safety consultant, is versed in CTE competencies, safety testing, and operations for the ladders and lifts, the fly system, as well as having extensive experience working with students in high school theatre operations. These tutorials are intended to supplement, not supersede, industry safety training. RAND CONSULTING AND DESIGN LLC is not an accredited certifying organization, but teachers will find that the courses are high school appropriate and industry relevant. Some school districts will award professional development hours when you submit to them your proof of completion.
