PRESETT, a division of RCD LLC, offers you a rigorous and high-standard set of safety, functionality and vocational education standards to use as a tool to self-assess your high school theatre's operations. Don't be concerned if your school's rating is low at first, the standards are an indication of areas in need of improvement to optimize the safety, functionality and vocational education in your high school theatre.

SELF- ASSESSMENT
How does your school hold up to PRESETT's Risk Management Standards? Professional Staff (+2 points) The school theatre shall be staffed by a Theatre Manager and/or Technical Director, and at least one professional Theatre Technician for each discipline – lighting, sound, stage/rigging. CTE Teacher (+2 points) Students who are designing, constructing, running sets, lights, sound, props, costumes, hair and makeup or stage managing shall only do so in a CTE class, taught by a highly qualified teacher who is Technical Theatre CTE endorsed as per the Department of Labor and Industries requirements in their state, Theatre Systems use Protocol (+1 point) Students and outside users may only use the systems in the theatre, such as the counterweight system, under the supervision of a theatre employee. A written protocol must exist and be made available to all users for each system’s operation; i.e. lighting, sound, sets, rigging, costuming, make-up, and house management. Safety Manual & Safety Signs (+1 point) The school theatre shall have a Theatre Safety Manual available to all users at all times. And the school theatre shall have necessary and appropriate safety signage posted. Supervision (+1 point) No student shall be unattended in a theatre. For school and district events there shall be at least one district Theatre Technician provided by the district to site-supervise in each area where students are working; including, but not limited to lights, sound, stage/rigging, costume/make-up, and house management. Individuals, groups and organizations renting the high school theatre for their events are required to hire at least one district Theatre Technician to site supervise and run the equipment in each area of the theatre being used for lighting, sound and stage/rigging. Trained Students & Users (+1 point) All student or outside users operating the equipment and systems shall be trained by a theatre employee and shall have a signed Liability Waiver on file (signed by parents if a minor under 18 years of age). All training must be documented. Appropriate & Functional Equipment (+1 point) Supplies, equipment, and systems shall be appropriate to their intended functions, and in safe and functional working order. Equipment, supplies and systems shall be appropriate to the educational level of the students. The school theatre shall be inspected by a theatre inspection professional no less than once every three years, preferably once every two years. Fair Compensation (+1 point) The Theatre Manager/Technical Director's salary and benefits shall be comparable to the salary and benefits of the other facility managers in the school district (such as the stadium manager, pool manager, etc.), at a level which reflects the local economy. The Theatre Technician's pay rates and benefits shall be comparable to the pay rates and benefits of other skilled laborers in the school district, at a level which reflects the local economy.
