Why Support Technical Theatre Education in our High Schools
Entertainment is the backbone of our society. You have only to look at the credits after a movie to see how many technicians and artists are employed in the Industry. Students involved in technical theatre in our high schools are our future theatre and opera house technicians, designers, cinematographers, graphic artists, and our football half time show designers and technicians, ________________(you fill in the blank, the list is endless). Entertainment Industry employees are highly skilled workers, yet high schools trivialize this vocation as playing in the theatre. The amount of funding going to the entertainment arts versus sports in high schools is in inverse proportion to the amount of money spent on entertainment versus sports in the real world:
One high school in Washington state hired 7 coaches for 10 Track team students, while the Drama teacher alone served 60 students as the Producer coach, TD coach, Set Design/Construction coach, Lighting coach, Sound coach, Costume coach, Stage- fight coach, and the House Management coach. One school district in Wyoming agreed to provide coaches for a new softball team at their high school (typically serving only 15 to 20 students) at the cost of $36,332 for the first year and $27,544 each year thereafter, while one teacher advises the 'Theatre Guild' by themself on a stipend of $5335 per year. If so many high schools won’t fund technical theatre education, then we in the industry are going to reform how high school theatres provide technical theatre education for our students. It's time to take matters into our own hands! |
