According to the Oxford Dictionaries a guild is an “association of craftsmen or merchants, often having considerable power” and “an association of people for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal”.
According to Wikipedia “A guild is an association of artisans or merchants who oversee the practice of their craft/trade in a particular area…They were organized in a manner something between a professional association, a trade union,…They often depended on grants of letters patent (any form of document, deed, contract, letter, dispatch) from a monarch or other authority to enforce the flow of trade to their self-employed members…An important result of the guild framework was the emergence of universities…they originated as guilds of students…craftsmen tended to form associations based on their trades…each of whom controlled secrets of traditionally imparted technology, the "arts" or "mysteries" of their crafts. Usually the founders were free independent master craftsmen who hired apprentices”.

The Stage Technicians & Artists GUILD for Education
is a professional membership association where merchants and craftsmen with considerable power (in our case – Entertainment Industry companies and individual advocates) mutually aid the enduring practice of their craft/trade through the support of technical theatre education in high school theatres, which depends on grants (in our case – sponsorships) to enforce the flow of trade to their self-employed members (in our case - the technician and artist mentors), who then impart the technology, arts or mysteries of their crafts (in our case – mentorship of technical theatre practices) to guilds of apprentices (in our case - high school technical theatre students), in the pursuit of a common goal (in our case - supporting technical theatre vocational programs in high schools for the advancement of the entertainment industry).
